The United States has its own, the American Open, which takes place in the weeks around Labor Day at Flushing Meadows in Queens, New York. The destination of the others are France, Australia and the UK. The French Open takes place in Paris at the Roland Garros stadium in early summer. The Australian Open kicks off the tennis calendar in January at Melbourne Park. Wimbledon takes place in the summer in London and is probably the most well know of the Grand Slam events. Outside of these famous four, the Association of Tennis Professionals, the ATP, organizes a world tour of events in which the elite players of the world compete. The ATP World Masters comprises the most prestigious tournaments outside of the Grand Slams and take place in venues around Europe and Asia as well as North America. Other notable competitions include the Davis Cup, a team competition between countries. Nations compete in leagues and gain promotion, or relegation, as they strive to enter the top tier and play for the trophy itself.
