If you’ve been an armchair tennis player for years, watching match after match on your direct tv but never actually getting out on the courts it’s time you hit some balls around! Don’t be intimidated, take the game one step at a time and follow our tips for starting off right.
Get the right Gear: You don’t need a ton of things to play tennis but make sure you start with two cans of new balls, as good a racket as you can afford and some white soled shoes. You won’t want to look like a novice by dress even if your shots are all over the place.
Learn the Basics: You can actually learn a lot of what you need to know about tennis OFF the court! Get online and research scoring basics (they can be complicated) as well as etiquette and notable players and matches. Start on our site!
Get a Coach: You can hire a tennis pro relatively inexpensively for hourly lessons – aim for once a week. Once you feel more confident on the court you’ll be ready to play a real opponent!

Every year there are four main tennis tournaments, or Grand Slam events, that take place across the globe. The United States has its own, the American Open, which takes place in the weeks around Labor Day at Flushing Meadows in Queens, New York.

The destination of the others are France, Australia and the UK. The French Open takes place in Paris at the Roland Garros stadium in early summer. The Australian Open kicks off the tennis calendar in January at Melbourne Park. Wimbledon takes place in the summer in London and is probably the most well know of the Grand Slam events.

Outside of these famous four, the Association of Tennis Professionals, the ATP, organizes a world tour of events in which the elite players of the world compete. The ATP World Masters comprises the most prestigious tournaments outside of the Grand Slams and take place in venues around Europe and Asia as well as North America.

Other notable competitions include the Davis Cup, a team competition between countries. Nations compete in leagues and gain promotion, or relegation, as they strive to enter the top tier and play for the trophy itself. These matches take place in the home country of one of the competitors.

Frustrated with the hassle of depending on someone to re-string your tennis racket? This procedure can be done right in your own home. While it will involve a learning curve, over time you could become a pro. This process of re-stringing, however, does require a machine.

These machines can cost in relation to what you expect to get out of it. An entry level machine may set you back between 150-200, but over time it will pay for itself. Want more? Click here. The independence of taking care of your own equipment is truly priceless. Today with fuel costs you can save by simply not having to travel to a shop twice. It also eliminates having the inconvenient wait time to get the racket back.
This investment can prove invaluable to your tennis game. You alone can determine and set the tension in your racket. If you decided it isn’t right for you, then you can change it again. It takes the hassle out of relying on someone else.

While a stringing machine is a necessity, motivation and desire are the other components needed to perfect the art of stringing tennis rackets. You could even get good enough to set up your own shop!

Women’s tennis has been enjoying a spike in popularity in recent years. This increase can be attributed largely in part to the Williams sisters. These sisters, Venus and Serena, have been dominating the world of professional tennis ever since their entered the pro ranks in the late 90′s. They have both been ranked world No. 1 at some point in their career and are still dominant to this day.

They are very important to tennis for a couple of different reasons.Want more? Click here. The first being that they are sisters and people are always fascinated by family members who face off on the court against each other. It is fun to see a professional rivalry meet up with a sibling rivalry in the sports world. The second reason is that they are African-American and professional tennis was in sore need of African-American stars because of its less than diverse reputation. The third reason that they are so important to professional tennis is that they are American. Pro tennis had been starved for American stars for a long time before they burst on the scene.

The Williams sisters helped pave the way for young African-American girls to break into the world of professional tennis. They also provide a fun and competitive rivalry for tennis fans to watch.

Every summer, Wimbledon fortnight brings a quintessentially English flavor to the global sport of tennis. Since the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet club formed there in 1868, Wimbledon’s association with tennis has become a household name for all with even a passing interest in the game.

As a host of one of the four Grand Slam tournaments held each year, Wimbledon offers something different to the American, French and Australian opens. Wimbledon is the only one to be held on grass, a surface that tennis purists hold dear. Want more? Click here. The dress code at Wimbledon differs from the others in that players are required to wear predominantly white.

Tradition rules the day at Wimbledon, where modern technology and stadium stand shoulder to shoulder with the protocol and demeanor of sporting values. It is a venue awash with history and memories, of great players and matches prominent in tennis folklore.

And where else can the winner of the title have their trophy presented by a member if the British Royal family? Whether it is the strawberries and cream, the inevitable rain delays, or the British fans cheering on in vain for a home champion, Wimbledon offers you a slice of Britannia along with the best tennis in the world.
